PC v. Mac hard drives--same or OS specific?

Maybe this is a dumb question but can you put any hard drive into any laptop? Or, put another way, are the hard drives for laptops independant of the OS to be put on them? I ask b/c Apple seems to like big bucks for upgrading hard drives or RAM.
Thanks.

I believe Apple laptops use industry standard notebook hard drives.

I believe you can use any hard drive made for laptops and the harddrive doesn't effect what operation system you can install (unless they invented something new)

Yeah, any notebook HDD will work fine, just don't buy it from Apple. You have to be sure of the thickness though, either 12mm or 9mm thick.
