How is this possible?

First, I make no bones about having Zero knowledge about wireless computing. Here's the story:

A relative has been emailing us for a while now with the same eddress, but my Better-Half does the communicating. After hearing about this sob story they gave, I got the smell of fish.

So, how does someone who is no longer in college send / receive email from a college eddress? ... and from a wireless laptop with no ISP service?

First, I would think their account would be canceled once they left (temporary dropout, maybe not temporary...) the college.

Second, how can you send / receive email when you don't have an ISP? I have no idea how hotspots work, but don't you need some kind of account to connect?

TIA

They are accessing the uni network wirelessly.
Either their old account is still active and they are accessing it from out side the uni grounds wirelessly or again wirelessly they are accessing someone else's account.
If the return address or send address is their old uni one then the account hasn't been closed yet.

Their college account is still active and they are probably accessing it from a public hotspot using webmail. Some colleges let you keep your email address for life if you graduate.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Several of the Doctors in the residency program my wife is the coordinator for still use the internet access provided by Michigan State U cuz it's free. They can use the dial up service for free or they can use a hot spot like Panera Bread and access their email for free.

Yep, I know for a fact this wouldn't be very hard. At Florida State where I attend, you are allowed to keep your .edu address for 6 months after you graduate. I wouldn't be supprised if it was longer at other colleges. And as for the connection, the biggest ISP by pure numbers these days is linksys. If you are in a college town, there are wide open wireless access points everywhere.
