Sony Vaio TX RAM limitations
Hey all, I am about to get a VGN-TX laptop. Link In the specifications, it says it has 512Mb RAM, upgradeable to 1.5Gbs. I don't understand this, there are two RAM slots, so why only 1.5Gbs? Why not two 1GB sticks? It doesn't make sense to me, maybe one slot is better than the other, and can take more?
Can anyone explain this? Thanks in advance.

You can run two different capacity sticks of RAM at the same time. In other words, the spec sheet is referring to a case where you have a stick of 512MB along with a stick of 1024MB to combine for 1.5GB. The 1.5GB limiation is a chipset limit more than anything - given the slimness of the system, certain amenities, like RAM, are limited.

The 512mb it comes with is nonremovable and it has ONE slot which will take up to a 1 gb module.

Ah, a non removable 512mb stick, that would definitely explain it. May I ask how you knew that? First-hand knowledge or technical-speculation? Thanks for the answers.
It would seem that a chipset limitation was slightly trivial, it wouldn't be that hard to switch it so you could get a full 2Gbs in there. |
