Laptop...all the way.....you'll end up using it more. Plus hours in a chair will kill your back.

You will be disappointed with the gaming performance of a laptop unless you spend some serious bucks on one with a high end video module.

I say, if you need to move it about or space is an issue then a laptop is a good idea.
As glc says though, a laptop is no match for a similar priced desktop PC...particularly when it comes to gaming!

The one question I ask folks about to build or buy a new pc who face this same dilemma, "Do you need to take your work with you? Do you need a portable pc?" If the answer is "yes", then you need a laptop. If the answer is "no", go with the desktop. As others have said, you'll get more for your money, you'll have a better chance of upgrading later on and desktops are not as heat sensitive as laptops.

I used to be a member of the desktop crowd, but I wanted to get a laptop for gaming, to outpower my desktop. I was looking at a custom built Sager with a 3.8ghz P4, 2GBs of RAM, and lots of other features. The price got up around 3600USD, and I was about to take loans to buy it, before I reached the realization that laptops are supposed to be portable, not ten pound bricks, that outpower desktops. I then found myself with a Sony Vaio TX 10inch little piece. That worked fine for me, without the games added to the equation.
It's up to you, but I'd go for the laptop, you'll use it more.

I have an HP dv1000 Special Edition.
It's a very nice laptop, with a CD/DVD Burner, Dual Core Centrino(Core) @ 1.66 GHz, 80GB HD, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Graphics Chip, and alot of nice DVD/CD playing options. Since you mention gaming, I immediatly though of my laptop. Some of you gamer pros swear by your desktops, but to be honest, this laptop plays games and displays graphics much, much better than my old desktop. It was 5 years old, but still. I can actually play Halo, Flight Simulator, and almost any war-game with little to no graphic/rendering problems. The only problems I have are when you come to a large warzone/airport where there are ALOT of things to load, like KLAX(Los Angelos Intl.) and KJFK(Kennedy Intl.), and the wide-open spaces of some of the Halo levels. Other than that, I think you'd be pretty happy as far as gaming. The only downside is the area around the hard-drive, graphics chip, and processer get very, very, very hot, both on the top and on the bottom, reguardless if the CPU is idling or not. As far as media, I have 14 or 15 CDs on here and I haven't had any hard drive problems. I am almost to the point of filling the hard-drive, so I would definatly recommend an upgrade to something bigger. I, personally, am waiting for Seagate's release of the 200GB internal drive. There are also some LED lit buttons for HP's Quickplay so you can turn the laptop on, pop in a DVD, press a button, and watch it immediatly. It also has a remote that fits into the expansion slot if it's not being used. The display is awesome, although the screen it a tiny bit small(14" Widescreen). The highest resolution is 1280 x 768 which makes games very realistic. There is also a BrightView option that is supposed to be the equivilent of HD, although it's just a marketing idea. It burns CDs/DVDs nicely, although the fastest is 24x for CD and 8x for DVD. Another very cool thing is lightscribe. Apparently, this is where the CD laser focuses a beam of light on the top of the disk and engraves words or patterns, which makes labeling much easier than getting out the ink and such. I think I've explained it pretty well, and if you have any questions, ask or PM me. The portability is awesome, as others have said. The ability to play games in your living room makes you want to laugh in the desktop user's face! I took some screens to futher persuade you(I'm practicing persuading for school, lol). http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d140/Ofna/Halo5.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d140/Ofna/Halo3.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d140/Ofna/Halo2.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d140/Ofna/Halo1.jpg Last edited by Panama Red; 09-08-2006 at 04:09 PM. |
