the problem is when running on battery power it turns completely off as soon as the wxp desktop display comes on with full brightness,

Sounds like "cranking amps" on a car battery, the battery won't start the car but it will run it OK if you jump start it.
The start up drain is probably too much for the battery reserve, no chance of a spare you can try it with?
Not trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs but, you have checked the battery to case contacts?

I followed the links and it came up with a Compaq battery.

Not a bad price if it's correct, pity it's out of stock.

My mistake I missed that in your first post, the new battery is possibly faulty.

I just can't see how it can be anything else, you said that it runs fine on AC power and fine on battery only "after AC had started it up".
If there was a faulty power lead between the battery contacts and the motherboard I would have thought it would be there all the time not just at startup, unless, you have a dry solder joint that is going high resistance on full load startup.

well now I am beliving that the battery is defective, with the power settings at the lowest settings on battery after starting it up on ac, it will loose power as soon as I start to do something that uses more power, its like something in the battery pack is openning up and killing all the power.
so looks like I need to call them in the morning to see what they want to do.
it (the new battery) should be under warranty.

update

well I sent the battery back to the supplyer and they sent it back to the mfg, who in turn run it through there quality control test and the battery checked out fine.
they are going to take another new battery and run the test on it and send it to me.

now if by chance I still have the same problem, I will open the laptop up and see if I can find any thing inside by the dc power circut that don't look right.

anyone have any idea how to open up the case of this laptop ?

I have never had to open one up before.

update

sent the new battery in for replacement, the dealer in turn sent it to his supplies to be tested and replaced with a new one,
well the report I got back was that the battery I sent back did check out good and they sent me another new one anyway.
put the new battery in and charged it up and run it through the paces and everything is working just fine now.

so the old new battery did have something not good in it.
