USB card vs. USB hub

Right now I own a Dell Latitude C640, it has only one USB 1.1 port.

Would it make a difference if I bought a USB 2.0 card for $60 or a USB hub for less than $20? The only thing I am going to be using it for is simple USB peripherals, nothing like external hard drives or heavy transfers. I'd prefer to pay less. Thanks!

If its just to connect a mouse or number pad, the 1.1 from a hub will work fine. You might want to think about planning for the future though, perhaps buying an external drive or an iPod.

What if I am trying to connect 4 USB gamepads? Would a powered hub work or would there be far too much traffic for that measly 1.1 port to handle?

An AC-powered hub should work fine. How much traffic can a gamepad create?

I'm really not sure, the only thing I know is that when we hooked up a USB keyboard and tried to play little multiplayer games on it, it would only register a certain amount of keystrokes at one time, making it frustrating to play on occasion when you have a flurry of hands on different keys. Perhaps that was just a keyboard limitation, though.
