Laptop batteries

What's the story on laptop batteries causing fires? Does anyone know what batteries are problems?

Open your browser.

Go to www.google.com

In the search box, type:

laptop battery recall

Then just hit the enter key.

Wink HP and Compaq

Just today there was yet another press release where Sony announced another 300,000 laptops affected by the recall. Supposedly that brings the worldwide number up to some 7 million laptops.

Main problem is overheating of the battery pack, resulting in fire. Somehow, HP managed to escape before the problem because they changed manufacturers prior to the problems. Fujitsu, Dell, Sony, Apple, Toshiba, Lenovo and others are affected. Dell has recalled some 4 million of their laptops, so I think they are the company whose products are most widely affected.

The risk stems in part from the manufacturing process. The batteries can short-circuit because tiny shards of metal are left in their cells during production.

Having bought an HP Pavillion I can say the same thing, and I WILL! However, I am not sure it was anything but dumb luck on my part as far as the battery recall goes.

Just saw a new article about the battery recall by Sony. I knew this was bad, but 10 million laptops? Whew!
