laptop express card slot
i understand that express card slots are going to eventually replace pcmcia cards in laptops, is that correct?
is there much out there right now as far as express cards such as wireless cards, expansion cards, etc? or is the technology still too new? |

It's still too new for many cards to be out yet.

Interesting. PCMCIA has been the standard since I got out of IT sales some 10 years ago, so it sounds like Express is not going to happen overnight. |

In laptops, it is happening overnight. The new Intel chipsets for laptops no longer support PCMCIA. The need for cards has reduced drastically now that most laptops have onboard modems, ethernet adapters, and wireless adapters - and a lot even have onboard flash card readers.

The number one thing people are using ExpressCards for at this point is cellular broadband, like EV-DO from Verizon and Sprint, and HSDPA from Cingular and European carriers. Even then, a lot of business-class laptops have built-in cellular broadband available as an option, anyway.

OK, so what does the slot look like? I have a new HP Pavilion dv8000 laptop with more slots, ports, and connectors on the sides than I have ever seen on a laptop. However, based on the above posts I must assume that this laptop is not equopped with an Express Card slot, right?
What do they look like, exactly? Each side of this laptop has a slot. Both look like PCMCIA slots. Neither are likely to be Express Card slots, right? Any photos of the cards or the drive opening to help a person identify it? EDITED TO ADD: OK, I found a photo of some Express Card modules, which vary in width. I found a web site which describes the features as well: http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/qa.jsp In order to find out whether my laptop has one of these Express Card slots, is there a particular place I would look for it within the Win XP Device Manager? As it turns out, I do have an Express Card slot in this HP laptop, so I am all set! Now that I know this I can purchase that type of card, if any are available, rather than a PCMCIA card.

There are a few things out there, but not really. For example, my roommate just got a Dell 1705 with a bluetooth/media remote express card.
Laptops now come with 3-6 USb 2.0 ports, internal wifi radios, and built in card readers like GLC said so there's not much demand for addons. I'm hoping that wifi broadband will be more affordable in the future - it has some pretty decent prospects.

Well I have only one laptop, and I want an Express Card for Digital TV, so I have a disctinct need for an Express Card version of that device. I don't want to purchase a PCMCIA card for that fucntion, so that is why I wanted to know if my laptop had an Express Card slot, and it does.I also have an integral wireless 802.1 b/g function, but my MIMO router is a lot smarter and quicker than the G card So again I want to purchase an add on card, but don't want to purchase a PCMCIA version of same. I don't like the limitations of 802.1b/g wireless, so I want the ability to " add on " a card. I don't want to purchase a PCMCIA version of that card. agresbach - There should be a small square button next to the slot. Push it in once and it should pop out. Now push it all the way in, and the expresscard or dummy card should pop out.

My remote does not have any storage place on the laptop itself. The remote came in a separate plastic wrapper in the original box, and I leave it in the black laptop case. I don't think my laptop has a storage location for the remote. The piece in my Express Card slot is nothing but a dummy card, plastic, and i got it out by pusiing it INWARD a bit. It then springs out. I hope this helps a bit. The small black button is on the PCMCIA card slot as described by Stuey, but the Express Card slot on my 8000 has not black button: the PCMCIA does, the Express Card does not. Oh. Hmm. I was under the impression that expresscard slots and pcmcia slots were mutually exclusive. That just goes to show that I live in my own small little world.

They are mutually exclusive. They are the same *size* but the Expresscard slot has a tab inside it that blocks insertion of a PCMCIA card.

nonono, I meant that I thought that a laptop has one or the other, but Sunset's comment suggests that his laptop has both.

Some do have both. It depends on chipset support.

PC card
Along this same thread, I'm looking at an Acer laptop for traveling and Sprint says I need a "Type ll PC card". I can't find anywhere in the specifications if this laptop has the required slot. I sent an e-mail to Newegg but havn't received a reply yet. It's an Acer Aspire AS3618AWXMi model. Anyone familiar with this model that can help me ?

That one appears to have a standard Cardbus (PCMCIA) slot - which accepts Type II cards.
