Just curious, what brand and model number is the lappy? It seems adequate for its planned usage.

Moved to Mobile Tech.

Acers are pretty good laptops. I personally wouldn't get a Turion -- not really competitive with Core Duo/Core 2 Duo -- but you can't really argue with the value for money there.

The only thing that drives me nuts is the way Acer partitions the drive. It's got 3 partitions including the recovery partition, and they are all FAT32.

Can't you always request the CD for a little more then just erase the partitions and configure it yourself?

Not always. In fact, Dell is the only manufacturer I know of that will actually provide a vanilla XP CD if one doesn't come with the computer to begin with.

Yes, you can convert them.

Make SURE you build the recovery media yourself using the provided utility before you start messing with the partitions.

A good reformat will take care of that.

Yeah, and then how are you going to reload it? The restore media you create is just going to put it back the way it was.

If you have a copy (legal) of the OS one could boot from the WIN XP disk lets say then wipe out those partitions and make them into one big one. Then load the OS using the supplied OS key. I do it all the time for customers. Just ensure you know what drivers you must load to get everything working correctly. Most of those can be downloaded from the manufactures' web site.
