Port Replicator / LCD

Hi all,

I'm looking for a Dell docking station (or port replicator, what's the difference?) and a Dell LCD. The replicator has to fit my 17" wide screen laptop (specs in signature). I'd like the LCD to be a high quality 19". I'm looking for good quality products here, so don't worry about the price. I'll also be looking for a wireless keyboard and mouse (also of high quality) that'll work with the docking station / replicator.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The only thing I'm not positive of is whether the receiver will work with USB only.

Keep in mind that the port replicator will be USB-based. There is no docking port on most of the Inspirons, so there's no way to run DVI or power through.

That kind of ruins the point for me. Is there any other brand out there that'll fit my laptop?

As I said, there is no docking port, so the only way you will be able to connect any port replicator will be via USB. USB doesn't handle video well (it would be unaccelerated), and doesn't handle power at all. The only thing it's really good for is adding parallel, serial and PS2.

I would recommend just connecting your new monitor up to the DVI port on the back of the laptop and calling it a day.

The monitor GLC linked, how would my laptop look on that? It's a widescreen resolution 1440x900 and the LCD is 1280x1024 and my laptop doesn't even offer that resolution.

I ran a 20" (1600x1200) LCD on my XPS Gen 2, and it worked fine. You should be able to run it with no problem.

The reason I recommended that monitor is because the USB replicator does not support widescreen resolutions. If you use the direct laptop video port you can run either.

The 9300 has a DVI port, and the USB is going to be unaccelerated versus the GeForce Go 6800 in the 9300 -- so I would definitely not use the USB VGA.
