Ibm thinkpad laptop DEAD ????

Guys the wife has asked me to have a look at an ibm thinkpad laptop . She is a service manager for a car dealership and this laptop is used for fault diagnosis on the cars. Its got expensive diagnostic software on it and it looks like the techs have killed it. They dont take care of things like this , so i was wondering if i explain whats happening , if you can help .
It has an external dvd drive to load software on , connected via usb . Problem 1 , both the usb,s look like they are broke , one has one pin pushed back , and the other one looks ok , but the casings cracked all round it. Problem 2 is it wont boot . What im getting is " error 0200 fixed disk failure " Ive tried all the usual options , and nothing . Is the hard drive dead ? or is there any way to retrieve the software on it ?? . I cant get it to boot from the cd , because the usb,s are not responding.

Since this is a "company" machine send it to the professional data retrieval folks.
Physical damage makes it a job for those guys since.

Have you tried taking the hard drive out and hooking it up to a desktop? There are adapters available for that purpose.

One screw is all it takes to get the hard drive out.

If it's busted up that bad, it's more cost effective to replace it. Get them a Panasonic Toughbook this time - it's designed for abuse. That will also eliminate the external DVD drive - just make sure you configure it with an internal DVD drive.

To fix the Thinkpad, you are gonna have to get a new hard drive and a PCMCIA USB card at the very least.

GLC, thats what i told them . I used to work for the same company as my wife , and i said those thinkpads are just not good enough for an everyday workshop environment . They have two , and now the other one has developed problems. The technicians go onto the internet and use it for stuff they shouldnt do . Its hard to try and educate them how to to take care of it . It just gets lashed round all day . The software thats on it costs around £5000, so its in their interests to take care of it. I might just give it back instead of taking something on which im not 100% about .

That's pretty rugged conditions if they can kill a Thinkpad - that's why I suggested a Toughbook. There are other brands of ruggedized laptops but the Panasonic is probably the best known.
