I would guess the battery is old and no longer able to hold the charge. Since it is an Ipod Photo, I'm guessing it is at least a year old.

From the Apple Support site:

Question: Does the battery ever wear out?
Answer: Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. As with other rechargeable batteries, you may eventually need to replace your battery.

Question: What is a "charge cycle"?
Answer: Lithium-ion batteries can be charged a finite number of times, as defined by charge cycle. A charge cycle means using all of the battery's power, but that doesn't necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could listen to your iPod for a few hours one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so you may take several days to complete a cycle. Each time you complete a charge cycle, it diminishes battery capacity slightly, but you can put your iPod's battery through many charge cycles before it will only hold 80 percent of its original battery capacity.

That's why I hate portable devices that have internal batteries. I know that not all of the Players out there are like that, but the ones that have the internal batteries are just a pain because everyone knows there's a limit to the number of times a battery will stand recharging.

I felt that way for a long time...but then it occured to me that a worn out battery is a good excuse to buy a new one

Having said that, I've not owned anything that the battery has failed on...even after a number of years good use. My sister does have a Creative Zen Micro which has recently started to not hold it's charge.

jer888 - Where you good about letting the battery run flat before recharging? Companies boast that the new lithium batteries have a no memory effort...the truth is...they are better, but they aren't perfect.

well i didnt let it run TOTALLlY empty to the point where it wouldnt turn on. i usually just charged it as soon as i got the "power source needed" message. it also wont connect to my computer, so im guessing it may be the usb cord or the port in the ipod
