Red SLVR

My wife's Birthday is coming up and we have been supporting the Red Project. She wants the Red SLVR phone, the only problem is we live in Dallas, Texas. The Red SLVR phone is only available in the UK. We have been using Cingular for years all over the world and will stick with them as a carrier. I called Cingular and they said they will support any phone with the unlock code. So here are a few questions to make sure before I buy one off eBay.

http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/red/

1. If I buy this phone off eBay without a SIM card will I be able to get a SIM card from Cingular and have all the features work?

2. I understand we will not get the same customer support with this phone, but will she still be able to text, send and receive pictures, and browse the web?

I am in uncharted waters with buying unlocked phones. We usually just get one from Cingular and use it until it dies. But she never ask for any thing and in my short married life I found that keeping the lady of the house happy makes for a happy home. It would probably make her happy if she had some thing that none of her friends had. Let me know if there is any thing wrong with this purchase.

Thank You, Matt

If the phone is sold unlocked and is not carrier-specific (customized OS) and is a GSM phone it should be fully supported no problem with a Cingular sim card. They charge $25 for their sim card.

you will have to setup some features manually on an unlocked phone in order to use it. i know a buddy of mine bought an unlocked phone and had to set features up like text messaging, setting up media net, web browsers, but i dont think he could get all of the features to work, at least not with cingular.

Most of the functions specific to the carrier are programmed into the SIM. You shouldnt have any problems with just getting a SIM from cingular and using it.

It's highly ineffective for use in North America and a lot of countries in Asia because of mobile termination rates.

*USA Charges - You may ask why the charges in the USA are relatively high? This is because the US networks charge a "Mobile Termination Charge" which unfortunately has to be passed on to the end user. - Sorry! To find out how you can avoid the incoming call charges read our "cunning" work around using SMS call back and your GeoSIM account here

That sounds nice, but our plan with Cingular is great. We have so many roll over minutes we will never have any overage charges. And we have been using my gsm phone for world travel for years and Cingular has been really cheap. I really just want the phone itself for my wife's Birthday as a surprise since no one else will have it here in the states. She is not expecting it so that will make it kind of nice. She never ask for any thing and she really likes the Red products. Happy wife happy home.

Thanks for all of your help.
