Laptop needs repair
I have a friend that has a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. She took it in for repair because it had a virus on it. Well she ended up buying a new laptop instead of fixing this one. I can get this dell inspiron 1000 from her without the hard drive. My question is if I put a new hard drive in and install a new copy of XP will this fix it? Thanks for the help

Yes. You wouldn't even have to replace the HDD if keeping the other is an option. Just a new install of XP (with reformatting) will make everything fine.

OK Thanks, she wants to keep her hard drive because it has personal information on it.

You won't even need a copy of XP if she has the Dell restore CD. If she didn't get one, she can buy one from Dell for a very nominal cost - have her do that and pay her for it. Make sure you remove her hard drive completely from the caddy as you will need the caddy for your replacement drive.

Actually, just get her to transfer ownership to you. Then you can go to Dell without going through her.
If you don't need a lot of space there is a 20 GB laptop hard drive on Newegg for $30. That should be the only thing you need to buy.
