Exclamation Problem Turning on Computer

Hi I have a Toshiba Satellite A105. Just a warning that I am clueless and forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology! Recently I have been having problems turning my computer on. When I press the on button the light flashes and then goes off. This continues for 3 or 4 cycles and then stops. I hear a clicking noise and a whirring noise like the computer is trying to start, but nothing happens. Eventually, after my many attempts to fix the problem, the computer will randomly boot up. Steps I've taken when this happens:
keep pressing the on button
use just the battery
use just the power supply
press random F keys
try to open my CD drive or tap the CD drive or press the eject button

The last one seems to be related somehow because every time the computer has actually turned on it's been after I opened the CD drive, tapped it, or just pressed the eject button.

This has happened 3 times. Each time it takes more time until it randomly decides to start again.
My only solution is to never turn off or restart my computer. Which eventually will not be an option.

any ideas??

Not even close! This is a laptop, not a desktop and switching that "red witch" changes the voltage selection on a desk top pc. Never do that. Be a little more careful of your advice please. Guessing wrong can cost someone else a bunch of money. If you're not sure of your suggestion, better to read what others have to say and post nothing at all.

Sounds to me like a dying hard drive. You need to save all your critical files on a usb drive or external hard drive right away before it fails completely.

Since the CD drive seems to relate to the issue, try removing it from the lappy and see if it boots up normally.
