Dell Inspiron E1505 or Lenovo Thinkpad T60 widescreen with the appropriate options. They both offer X1400 Mobility graphics.

To get a stronger video card you will have to get a 17" beast. Configure a Dell E1705 with a 2.16 and a Go 7900GS. I get well under your $2400 ceiling with 2 gigs of fast ram and the other toys you want. The XPS M1710 is very impressive, but a budget buster.

A word of caution -- the E1705 is about 8.5 lbs. The weight was not the issue for me when I had my XPS2, but rather the overall dimensions. If you want a powerful laptop, though, the E1705 is a very good bet.

That's why I first recommended the E1505 and the T60. The X1400 isn't THAT bad - it's a heck of a lot better than the Intel GMA that's standard. They are available with the higher speed C2D's.
