Question avantec notebooks

our local Sams has a very basic Avantec notebook for $499..

AMD Turion CPU (I thin about 1.2 mhz)

i think 512 mb ram, 80 gb hdd, 12" screen, DVD burner

my needs r basic: web browsing, some video editing, no gaming.

i like the small footprint of this model.

is this a good buy??

How is the frequency of repair record for this brand?

r there other brands in this ($400-$660) range with better reliability record?

Dell has the same cpu/ram/hdd combo for $534 right now and that's with a 15.4" wide screen. I'd trust theirs over others in the same price range.

Averatecs are okay. I have read things that put them roughly on the same level as Dells in terms of reliability. I am not sure about service and support though. If you like the 12" screen, that may be about the cheapest you're going to get a 12" laptop.

I just had an Averatec laptop hard drive die on me. Hopefully they are using higher quality ones now. Other than that they are just fine.

Newbuilder, dying hard drives are a problem on any laptop. I doubt there was a problem with a "low-quality" hard drive on your dad's laptop -- I would be interested to see the manufacturer and model number. Practically all OEM laptop hard drives are manufactured by IBM/Hitachi, Toshiba, and Fujitsu, with a few from Samsung. Seagate and WD do not have any deals with laptop manufacturers yet, so they are pretty much aftermarket-only.

The BIOS read it something such as PH-randomnumbersandletters. It was a fine laptop as I said, but most of the stuff was generic or aftermarket/3rd party supplies put into a laptop that said Averatec - for example the Lite-On power adapter...

It is not just random numbers and letters. That is the model number. If you were to get the exact model number I could probably tell you who manufactured it. There aren't that many laptop hard drive manufacturers -- I'd say Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu collectively own about 95% of the market.

Most AC adapters are manufactured by third parties -- you just don't see if most of the time. My ThinkPad's AC adapter says Delta Electronics Ltd. in fine print on the label. If you want to get really technical about it, very few OEMs manufacture their own laptops -- most of the work is subcontracted out.
