slowwww laptop
My laptop just recently started acting up. It takes forever to get to the log in screen (XP) and takes forever just to open applications, the hard drive, etc. Also, the McAfee Anti-virus errors upon boot up. I cannot run any anti virus software because of this and also because of the simple fact that it takes forever just to open a window. I called contacted tech support but they weren't that much help and said that either the hard drive may be corrupted or there is a virus. Is there anything i can check to see what the actual problem is and fix this laptop?
Thanks. |

Are you familiar with MSCONFIG and the startup window?

Yes, I ran msconfig and disabled the programs that i thought could be causing a problem at startup but still, the computer is acting up slow. I'm gonna try running the build in Recovery feature and see how that does

You may also try removing McAfee all together, it very well could be hogging resources.
How full is your hard drive? Defragged lately?

Yep, I'm in the process of removing McAfee but the computer is so slow, this may take a while. Also, this is my sister's computer and she hasn't defragged at all since getting it 4 months ago. I'll post soon with results.

I removed McAfee and tried checking the disc for errors but before finishing the check, an error occured. Now, when I try turning on the laptop, it just sits there at a blankscreen. Guess it's time to send it in to get fixed :/

Don't send it in untill we have at least had a chance to help you repair it, laptops are quite easy to work on but are considered specialist so they command high labour charges.
