The damage to the laptop left it so that there is a dim picture in the back, but now I can't even see that its just straight black...any diagnosis?

Moved to Mobile Tech.

The cable is an inexpensive part to replace, but you have to take off the bezel on the screen, as well as the keyboard and possibly the palmrest. If you are comfortable doing that, I am pretty sure the cable is a separate unit from everything else (goes from the motherboard to an inverter board in the screen area).

$300 is NOT inexpensive.

I don't know how much it would be direct from IBM/Lenovo, but I found it for about $11 on eBay:
