Tracking a stolen laptop

bad news

My dell laptop was stolen from home a few days ago.
The police asked me for the serial number in order to be able to help me.

All i got is a service tag number. Does anyone know if it possible to get the serial number from dell if i have the service tag?

Is there an actual hi-tech technique that can be used to track a laptop based on its serial number? Assuming that it will be used to log on to the web.

There was a thread on here sometime ago about a guy who's laptop was stolen, a little while after the theft he noticed that every now and again he was being kicked off messenger. I don't know if you know this but, if you are logged into messenger and you then log in again on another computer you are kicked off the original computer automatically, there is a way to track where the second login has taken place via IP information, you might want to try and keep your messenger running all the time because if who ever stole the laptop doesn't format and reinstall they might just login to your messenger account and kick you off, at least you will know it is being used and with the help of the police you might be able to track the machine down.

Have a read of this thread and then try private messaging Statica or GLC to see if they can help you, I don't know how to do it sorry.

Did you look on your sales receipt - or your account info on Dell's web site??

Have you tried contacting Dell at all to see if they can give you the serial number from the service tag that you have ATM. When in doubt contact the company and tell them the situation.

Contact your homeowner's insurance company - they may have ways to help you that you don't have access to yourself.

If you are renting, you may have had the option to get renters insurance. If you did, contact your landlord and they should be able to point you in the right direction to get the ball rolling with the insurnace company.

I see you live in Egypt. If so it maybe different there. This is advice for someone in the US. Sorry if that did not help you.

send dell an email with your customer number, your situation and why you need it. send it from the email address you used when you placed the order and then should be able to either email you your serial number or send it to you via regular mail
