Laptop Problems - Compaq 2135

Oh, where to start?

Compaq Presario 2135 CA laptop, 3 or 4 years old. This notebook was my full-time computer for about 3 years. All I really want to be able to do on it now is watch DVDs and videos, and do some word processing…all with the built in keyboard and touchpad.

I have reformatted and performed a clean install of Windows XP (SP1).

Here is the current list of problems:

-Touchpad is “jerky” – If I move the cursor back and forth, it will occasionally freeze for about a quarter of a second. This happens every couple of seconds or so.

-Keyboard freezes briefly – If I type, random keystrokes do not appear. May be related to the above mentioned problem. The letters that do not appear are different every time, so it is not a problem with certain keys. Here is an example of what I get if I attempt to type the alphabet several times in a row:

ABDEFGHIJLMNOPQRTUVWXZ
CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRTUVWXYZ
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSUVXYZ
ABCDEFGHJKLMNOPSTUVWXY
CDEFGHIJLMNOPQTUVWYZ
ADEFGHIJKLMNQRSTUVWXY
ABCDEGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ABDEFGHIJKNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ABCDEFGHIJLMNOPQRTUVWYZ

-A lot of things just stop responding at random – Internet Explorer, My Computer, Task Manager, Control Panel, Word Pad and Note Pad are just a few off the top of my head that have had problems. Also, if I try to download small files (such as drivers, etc), the download will always hang after a second or two…only the smallest files will complete the download after trying ten or twelve times.

-In general the computer is just sluggish.

Now, in order to hopefully rule out certain causes of these problems, here is a list of things that seem to work with no problems:

-USB mouse works fine.

-PS/2 Keyboard is good.

-Music and videos in Windows Media play with no performance problems.

So…does anybody have any suggestions? Is there hope for me to get this thing running properly ever again?

Sorry for the long post, but any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Did you install the "chipset" drives after you install XP?
Have you installed all the Windows updates?
