Have a buddy who bought his wife a Creative ZEN V player for Christmas and he can't get his PC to recognize it. I built this machine for him a few years ago and it has USB 1.1 ports. The ZEN V is a 2.0 device as the little "you are connecting a high speed device to a non-high speed port" bubble pops up when he connects it. I know that 2.0 devices "should" be backwards compatible with 1.1 but it just won't show up in device mangler, WMP, or any of the Creative programs. In searching the Creative support site, it says to make sure the PC is running SP2. Well, his machine has a bootleg copy of XP (shhhhh!) and it isn't even at SP1. At least I think so as My Computer properties says "Windows XP" version 2002 and that't it. He bit the bullet and ordered the online legalization thing from usoft. He hasn't installed it yet but I'm wondering if I mislead him by directing him to do that or should I have just had him get a 2.0 card? TIA

I would do both - get legal, install SP2, and get a 2.0 card.
You should see the hoops I had to jump through to get a Zen V to install on Win2K - not pretty at all. Creative is in cahoots with M$ on this one. It still only works in WMP - nothing else will load it, the Creative software will not install. |
