Unable to use keyboard
Dell Latitude CPx Pentium 3 500Mhz
Memory 256 WindowsNT 4.0 Service Tag # HJQT301 Problem After boot NT Admin password comes up but laptop keyboard does not work until after OS loads up. BIOS is A07. New Bios is A14. Tried running new BIOS upgrade from desktop but old bios does not support new bios structure to be run from hard disk and I don't have a floopy drive available. Is this a problem that has nothing to do with BIOS? Thanks. |

Not so new

If it has worked before, the keyboard may very well be broken - it looks like it has had a few years before it so I wouldn't rule that possibility out.
In the BIOS is there any option to enable the keyboard - this may sound silly since it works whilst in the OS but it is worth a try...

Win2000Server Config setting?
Keyboard can't be broken, otherwise it wouldn't work once it passes thru Admin password with an external keyboard. I installed Dell Enhanced Quietkey (PS2) / Performance (USB) Keyboards driver and it was able to pass thru admin password once then once rebooted it fell back on having to use external keyboard to pass thru admin password again.
I did looked into the BIOS setting but couldn't find anything. I wonder if there is a config setting within Win2000Server that keeps the keyboard from functioning. The othe thing I'm thinking about are to flash bios or reinstall OS. Any other ideas welcome. |

Can you be more specific? Does the keyboard type nothing at all - or is it just rejecting the password? If the latter, you may have Numlock on.

Are you trying to enter in the BIOS password or the password to logon to your OS?

It seems like Dell Enhanced Quietkey (PS2) / Performance (USB) Keyboards driver took care of this situation.
For clarification and future reference the laptop keyboard have no functionality when logging with admin password(will not type, period). An external keyboard had to be used to get passed this point. Once it looged on then the laptop keyboard would type. After installing Dell Enhanced Quietkey (PS2) / Performance (USB) Keyboards driver the laptop can type the admin password without the need for an external keyboard. Thanks for your ideas and questions. |
