Honistly, the first suggestion I would have givven is Dell. Their D420 is a great ultra portable. But if you don't like Dell, how do you feel about going the Apple route? The 13" MacBooks would be my solid second choice if you don't need Windows software.

I wouldn't buy an Apple if you plan on running Windows.

Yes you can. You do pretty much need 2 gigs of RAM for parallels which is Windows inside OS X, but if you just want to dual boot the only extra charge would be for the copy of XP. And the basic MacBook with a 60 gig hard drive and 512 mb RAM would be $1,048 shipped from Amazon.
faulkner132 Both BootCamp and Parallels work quite well actually. You do need to understand that if you're going to run XP and OS X at the same time with Parallels you do need more RAM, but it works very well if set-up right. Last edited by Staren; 01-15-2007 at 05:06 PM. |

You can do it either way. The best performance is running them separately, the same way you would dual boot Windows and Linux. You would be in one, then reboot the computer and tell it to run the other one. This also has the advantage of no extra hardware requirements. Any Core or Core 2 MacBook can handle this with ease.
Here is the info on BootCamp: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ The other way is to run Windows programs inside OS X. The program that does this is called Parallels. It sounds like BootCamp is what you want though. Just the ability to pick one or the other as you boot up. I think this might be the most cost effective choice for you. You can get cheaper laptops, but their usually 14" or 15" screens and 5.5 lbs or heaver. The cheapest siub 5 lbs, 13" screen or less laptops are at least $1,300, unless you want to get into a smartphone or something like that. Last edited by Staren; 01-15-2007 at 08:08 PM. |
