IBM thinkpad a31p LOCKS up

just got a thinkpad a31p from ebay spent $260 with shipping, P 4 1.6 ghz 256 mb floppy drive cdrw drive 30 gb drive. It was stated as working it didnt come with an OS. So i installed an OS win XP pro, locked up twice while installing and then once the OS was running it locked up about every 3-10 minutes from start up to lock up. Havent found any info on it although one forum had a little info on it some one with the same problem but no solution. When it locks up the screen stays lit and everything in screen locks up no mouse no keyboard. Finally it ran long enough for a SCANDISK no problems, but after the scan disk the machine now runs for alot longer but still locks up randomly. Im gonna try and install IBM drivers and see what happens

Try testing the ram.

www.memtest.org

Also blow the dust out of the vents - it may be overheating.

9 passes, no errors - that's good enough. It runs till you stop it.

ok so the mem test passed, now when i turn it on sometimes it doesnt go on it just stays on a black screen and also when ever if freezes the screen stays on just lose mouse and keyboard control installed the new IBM drivers. Dont know what else to try got it from ebay and since the seller wont give refund i posted a dispute with paypal what are the chances i will get y money back. The seller wants me to ship it back to him and pay for shipping and then pay for shipping to get it sent back to me. So im gonna wait for pay pals decision if they advertised it as working i should get my loot back right?

Welcome to the world of used laptops. You have no idea of what kind of abuse it has seen. You should only buy used laptops from reputable specialists that offer a decent warranty.

Also, the dispute will likely drag on for months (I filed a dispute on an item in early December and it is still in review) and even if you win, you will have to pay return shipping anyway.
