Red face Laptop newbie question

Does a laptop extrictily need to have the battery inside in order to work on the AC power outlet?

I got a Gateway 7422GX and it doesn't work if the battery is not inside. If I plug the power cord the laptop tries to start but it reboots repeteadly until I put back the battery. Is this normal? This laptop just came back from Gateway repair and it is working fine so far. Please take out your laptop batteries and turn on the laptop and see if it works or not. Thanks.

If you need any more information about the case just ask me.

Personally, I think that is not normal. A laptop should work with just the A/C adapter attached and no battery. I know my Thinkpad works this way. However, your particular Gateway model might be different. Do you still have the manual for the machine? If so, take a look in there. If not, go ahead and give Gateway tech support a call to verify.

Highly doubt that it's the norm. In fact, if you're using a laptop as a desktop machine (not using it on batteries) for extended periods of time it is recommended that you charge the battery to about half and then remove it. You should definitely be contacting Gateway.

I guess My Old power adaptor has a problem which happens just sometimes, so I changed it to the new one they sent me. I tested the voltage in the old one with the multimeter but it showed the right one but I think when you work for an extended period of time it stops sending voltage. So Far It's working right with the New Power Adaptor and new Wire To The Power adaptor.
