Which laptop batteries are safe???
In light of the announcement that Toshiba is recalling 10,000 Notebook batteries ( see story on Yahoo News at: Toshiba Recalls 10,000 Notebook PC Batteries - Yahoo! News ), I'm curious to know what type of Laptop battery is safe?
Have they come out with an improved battery that doesn't present danger of spontaneously catching fire? Just curious if anyone had heard anything as I'm considering getting a laptop, although I'm in no big hurry (I'd like to research this first) If anyone has any sugestions concerning which type of laptop battery is safe, please let me know. |

I don't think you are going to be able to buy any laptop now with a battery that is currently recalled so I don't think you need to really worry about the specific battery. Most of that batteries that are being recalled were sold at least a year ago.
If you really are concerned look at each manufactures website. I wouldn't worry to much about or base a decision about a laptop on it.

One thing to keep in mind...out of the millions (or however many) recalled, how many actually caught on fire?

IMO, you don't have much to worry about. The problem has been identified and steps are being taken to make sure as few people as possible are affected by this. Honestly, this article was the first time I've even heard of a laptop battery causing a fire. I feel safe in telling you to go ahead and make your purchase without hesitation.

Do we just buy things and keep our fingers crossed that they work?
I can't roll like that as it is not responsible in my view. No problem. I'll look around and see if I can find any actual research being done by professionals working in the battery industry so I can educate myself on the accepted standards used by the scientists that are building these batteries. |

The batteries that were the problem were manufactured by Sony. Sony has recalled millions of their batteries already. I don't think Sony will continue to produce bad batteries, it wouldn't look good and they would probably end up losing even more money than they have already.
You probably can look but if what you said is true about Corporations they aren't going to just post information about their batteries esp if their bad. |

Your risks from getting your laptop stolen, lost in shipping or your credit card info getting compromised, although minimal, would be far greater than having your laptop catch fire.
