What's wrong with my laptop?

When I start my laptop, it makes this weird sound like a hardrive is breaking or something.
But after while, it works fine but it's slow (takes while for window to start) and it still makes that sound here and there.
I'm thinking it's my hardrive's problem but I'm not sure.
Can anyone help me?

It's a COMPAQ x1000 laptop with 1.5 ghz, 512 RAM, 40 gb, and Radeon 9200 64mb.

It could be the hard drive going....or it could be a bad fan.

Try blowing out all the vents with an air can (while the laptop is turned off) and see what happens.

Based on the sound you describe, I would backup any important data, as it sounds like your harddrive may be dying.
Then download the ultimateBootCd (www.ultimatebootcd.com ) to run diagnostics on your harddrive. You'll need nero or a similar burning program to burn the .iso file (windows won't do this properly by itself). If you don't have nero, deepBurner is a free download and will do what you need.

You'll need to find out the manufacturer of your harddrive. The device manager will tell you this; open up 'my computer' and right click. Click 'properties' => 'hardware' => 'device manager' and look under 'disk drives'.
