Notebook Cooling

I am trying to do my best to make sure my laptop runs smoothly and this heating problem isn't helping. I purchased this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834998345

... after about an hour of use, the heat dissipation is shot - I mean that after an hour you will notice no difference in cooling as it continues to heat up.

Right now the laptop is sitting on the table with this pad under it and its very warm, any recommendations for a good cooling solution that I can use when it is on the desk?

This is what I brought for my laptop:

Read the comments and do your research first though. I brought it years ago, by now I'm guessing there might be other solutions for laptop cooling.

I bought a cooling pad from Thermaltake because of its rave reviews and today I just noticed... when the laptop and the pad is on my desk, it runs hotter than without the pad. I lifted up the laptop away from the pad and watched the core temperature go fro 70C to 60C in five seconds...

Grab a dowel - an old broom handle is as good as any - and cut 4 slices off it about an inch thick. Glue something like rubber or cloth to the flat ends of the slices and use them under the 4 corners of the laptop as a stand.

i just open up the bottom and clean the fan and vents from dust. there is no warranty sticker on that panel so i guess they expect you to do it. i also plan to reapply some thermal paste on my gfx chip and the processor.

I stopped using the cooling pad and have some cardboard lifting the laptop about 2.5 inches off the desk and its idling at 51C for CPU and 49C for HDD.

Usually the cooling pad will have it idle at 60C for CPU and 55C for HDD.

Gonna put a fan in this box so it sucks air out more too.

I put mine on my lap. It stays pretty cool but I haven't been able to find a lap cooler yet.

Most new ones generally stay pretty cool. The Core2 Duo that I have runs a bit hotter than my last one a Pentium-M but it's still pretty cool. The older P4's and below got pretty hot. I personally think that it is a waste of money to buy a cooler for a new laptop.

Cleaning the dust out is the biggest help. There just isn't a lot of space in a laptop for a big heat sink, so surface area is at a premium. It doesn't take much dust to cover that surface area up. Takes just a few minutes to gain access and use a bit of compressed air to clean things up.
