Cursor jumping around when using laptop

i always hated my dads dell laptops because when you are typing sometimes the cursor will just jump to a complete random spot on the screen and then your typing will end up going like in the middle of a sentence you just wrote or something. i figured it was unique to his laptops, but then when using mine i just started noticing the same thing happened. i might try using vista instead of XP pro x64 for a while (it has a dual boot; see sig) and see if that resolves it, but has anyone heard of this before/how did you fix it?

Are you typing, and your hand rubs on the little pad thing that moves the cursor...? That'd do it...haha.

Most of the time it is the touchpad that is the problem. I had one the other day that was doing that. For some reason it turned out to be a bluetooth phone was causing the touchpad to be extra sensitive. Turning down the sensitivity on the touchpad seemed to fix it.

You could test that by turning off the touchpad and seeing if it still did it.

I had the same problem with my Dell laptop. I thought it was the touchpad so I cut a piece of cardboard and put it over the touchpad for verification purposes, and it didn't happen again.

With Dell if you install the Alps driver you can turn off the touchpad when it detects a USB mouse. I use this when mine is docked at work.

You don't need to click on the mouse button on the touchpad to get it to change locations, a simple tap on the touchpad will "click" the cursor to where it was pointing.
