Laptop Question
Hey everyone.
My wife has a Gateway Laptop that has an Intel Celeron 2.2Ghz processor and 512 MB of RAM. (I believe RAM is of the PC2100 type) It seems to be running pretty slow these days but we were really hoping to avoid buying a new laptop. She doesn't use her laptop for anything too intensive. Usually her usage consists of iTunes, surfing the net, school work, and most recently, using a program to create her own music. If we upgraded her RAM to 1GB, will it make much of a difference in performance? Are there any other things that could be done to prolong the life of her laptop until we can look at replacing it? Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. Thanks! |

Yes, RAM is a very smart upgrade. XP runs much smoother with 1GB of RAM. Also, make sure the hard drive isn't overly full (less then 75%) and that it is defragged regularly. Finally, keep the system clean of viruses and spyware. Check out CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

One more question I was hoping to have answered. I would normally go with Corsair Value Select RAM, but since I have only been able to find it in 512 MB increments, I was thinking of going with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208011.
This would give her laptop one 1gb chip and a 256mb chip. Is the Transcend brand a quality item or should I just stick with Corsair? Thanks! |

I'd stick with Corsair. Haven't tried Transcend myself.
However, the best way to buy RAM for any name-brand machine is through Crucial. They make good quality RAM and guarantee the RAM they offer is compatible with your machine. Simply use their configurator: www.crucial.com |

Thanks for the site info. I went there, checked it out, and will be placing an order soon. Her laptop is older and only supports a maximum of 1gb of RAM anyways so going with 2 x 512mb is the way to go.
Thanks for the assistance. |

It's a much better idea to buy from Crucial for older laptops, because they guarantee compatibility.
