Thinkpad R40 battery suddenly dies.
I got a 3-year-old Thinkpad R40 on P4-M. Sometimes the battery would just suddenly die. It would show a charge anywhere from 60 to 90%, and then display a critical warning ("save your work, battery is dead") and shut off.
Do I just need a new battery? Or is there something wrong with the machine itself? |

The contacts on the battery could be dirty/corroded.
It sounds like the battery has developed a memory of short recharges or the battery is actually getting weak. It is probably time for a new battery.
