The HP has a larger HD, smaller screen size, and weight about 1lb less with a larger battery. As far as brands go I'm not really on the up and up on who has better quality right now. I personally like smaller lighter laptops but between those two it more taste I think.

Sony is higher quality, more expensive for what you get, and has a lot more preloaded crapware. HP has suspect quality and support. Before you buy, price out a Dell.

Avoid HP and Comcrap... they are both poor IMO
Good brands are Dell, Sager, Acer, Sony. Dell usually has deals on, if you wait you might even get one that equates to 1/3rd of the price off (I did, and used the extra money to make it more gucci)

Sony has terrible support and spotty driver availability. They are more reliable than average but I would still recommend against them.
Dell and Lenovo are the best bets; Lenovo is usually more expensive, so if I were you I'd go with Dell.
