CD rom not in Device Manager

I am working on a Compaq Presario V4000 for my nephew and it doesn't have a CD ROM listed in the Device Manager. This computer came with the DVD R/RW drive in it when he bought it and it used to work. I looked in the bios and made sure it was in there, I tried to add it by doing an add device in Control panel and it doesn't give me the option to select a CD rom drive.

Any suggestions? It acts like its not there. I can load a CD into it and it spins up and the light is amber on the side but it doesn't read... obviously .

I can't think of anything else to try.

Andrew

Are there any flagged devices in device manager - such as an IDE controller?

That is another thing that is wierd, nothing is flagged. I can see the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller
-Intel(R) 8280 1FB/FBM Ultra ATA storage Controllers - 266F
-Primary IDE Channel

I took a screenshot but I can't figure out how to make it smaller than the allowed size. It's a bmp.

The secondary channel is missing. Make sure it's enabled in the bios. Until the secondary is seen, the optical won't be seen unless you slave it to the hard drive.

The secondary cable MIGHT be bad, as might the drive. Disconnect the cable at the motherboard and see if the secondary channel reinstalls when you boot it up.

No need to post a screenshot, but to reduce the size you have to save it as a .jpg, .gif, or .png. A .bmp is uncompressed.

I am not sure how to take this laptop apart :S. I tried to take the drive out and wasn't successful. The drive does light up when I put a cd in it.
