Windows installation hangs on "Setup is starting Windows"
I installed a new hard drive in my laptop because the old one fried the other day. I have tried installing Windows off the supplied recovery disk AND a seperate XP disc. Both times the installation of Windows hangs up before I can even make any selections. Any ideas? With the recovery CD it stops at "Setup is starting Windows."

What was the old hard drive, and what is the new one?

They are both Toshibas. Old one was a 40gb, new is 80gb. Do you need any other specs? I figured any would work.

I don't see why it wouldn't, but I've seen stranger things.
You may want to download memtest86+ and test the ram. www.memtest.org. Toshiba does not offer a hard drive testing utility, but the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test can test it, I'd recommend that. www.hgst.com. |

And test what with it? The new one? The old drive is dead, we have already tested it. I can really test anything on the laptop without a hard drive though.

Download the bootable cd iso versions of those utilities. From that you can make a bootable cd and run the utility from the cd. You will need a computer with internet access to get the iso files which you obviously have, and a functioning computer with a cd burner and cd burning software capable of burning the iso image file. Search the forum on how to burn an iso file if you're not sure how to do that; there are many posts on this subject and the procedure varies depending on which burning software you use.

Diagnostics are not things you install in Windows. They are meant to be used by booting with its own media.
