Laptop CPU Issues
Ok so my laptop has been having random crashing etc issues this past few weeks and I've just sort of been living with it. then while I was out of town I started it up and got an error that said the CPU was overtemp and it shut itself down.
I have this CPU in there currently: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Det...px?sSpec=SL7SA And I have this CPU laying around: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Det...px?sSpec=SL5YU My question is can I swap them, and how bad of a performance hit will I take? I mostly only use this computer for taking notes so the hit to performance isn't that big of a deal. Also for reference the laptop is an HP Compaq nc6220. Thanks for the help guys.

The two CPUs that you linked have different pin-out, so they aren't swapable.
As for the overheating, probably have dust/lint build-up in the computer. Can use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust.

Replacing the CPU will not fix the problem anyway. You need to correct the overheating issue.

I know that it is not an overheating issue as the keyboard was off with direct access to the heatsink and the heatsink was cool to the touch. And this also happens immediately at startup, I get to the Ubuntu login screen and it cuts off giving me a CPU overheat error. i will of course humor you and clear all debri and try again to see if it will work, I'll reply back in a bit.

If the heatsink was cool to the touch, the heatsink is not making proper contact with the CPU and it *is* overheating. Get out your heatsink compound and tools.

Ok So I cleaned it no dice. Then I reseated the CPU and HS and all seems to be good now, I am concerned however about the CPU as looking in the logs it reported a temp on previous shutdown of 3956 degrees C.

I doubt that temp is correct.

the worry is more that I have a dead temp sensor that will randomly shutdown my computer, but hopefully it was just a loose connection or something

That would be a motherboard problem. Wouldn't surprise me seeing as how HP/Compaq laptop quality isn't the greatest.
