Blank SOD
Alright, i've read a few forums on the possibilities, but i haven't quite got the answer i'm looking for. I have a Compaq 2175US. 1.5Mhz 40gig and 1024MB of RAM. Purchased in 2001. When starting the Laptop, it will go through 3 immediate reboots in a matter of 10 seconds of starting it, then the screen remains blank, no back light at all. I've done some investigating on my own. I don't see the HDD being accessed, meaning the HDD light doesn't flash. I've taking the HDD out and placed it in another laptop. I've re-installed windows by deleting the partition and installing a fresh copy of XP on it. I've successfully installed XP and updates on the HDD. The HDD is good from what i can tell. I put it back in the Compaq, same story. 3 immediate reboots and then remains a black screen, HDD is not being accessed. Of course the answer looks like the laptop is probably toast, but i'm hoping there is another fix for this. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you get it to boot to a floppy or CD? If so, you can run memory and hard drive diagnostics.

Try floppy or CD with the hard drive removed - to see if the hard drive is what's killing it.

Do the reboots occur while on the Windows startup screen, or while still on the BIOS screen? If it is on the Windows screen, put the hard drive back in the computer you used to install Windows on it, and go to Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery and uncheck "Automatically reboot." Then see if you can see a blue screen error.
