Looking to buy a new laptop

Hey guys. I am looking for a relatively cheap laptop that will be mainly for school work and projects and such. College and stuff coming up, i want to be prepared I dont know whats good out there at a good cheap price. I wont be doing any gaming but just watching occasionally videos on the computer mainly dvd's etc... If anyone has any ideas would be very helpful. Just a couple of things i think i would need is lightweight and long battery and enough space to hold work

Thanks in advance

Acer laptops are reasonably good. The one you picked is using a Pentium dual core which may affect battery life. If looking for a little better batery life could look to a Celeron or Core2Duo.
The Acer's do tend to come preloaded with a lot of useless apps.

Lenovo the company that now builds ThinkPads. (IBM sold their laptop division to them). The 3000 series is their lower priced models, so they won't be as high quality as the branded ThinkPad. But I will say that is a nice machine for the price.

You may want to look at some discounts through your schools IT department. You could probably find a good deal that way too.

As a college laptop, you may also want to consider ordering the laptop with a multi-year warranty. You never know what can happen.

First figure out your budget, then figure out some things that you want on a laptop. I personally think the 14" screen is too small. I would bump it up to 15.4. I would go with a minimum of 2GB RAM.

I would consider at least a 2 yr warranty. Dell's are decent. Lenova is a great brand but can be a bit pricey. Avoid Gateway, Sony and HP. You might even consider a Mac depending on what your school requires. You might look a Powernotebooks for some good non-name brand laptops.

The Inspiron 1520 and the Vostro 1500 are the same laptop, so configure both with the same specs and you may find a better deal. I personally think 14" is a better size than 15", but the Inspiron 1420 and Vostro 1400 are Vista-only, whereas the 1520/1500 are available with XP. The 15-inch ones also have better graphics, which may or may not be an issue for you.

If it's for college then you need to think hard about what you really need and what you want (but don't really need).
