Laptop lcd replacement question

I was curious if you can replace a laptop lcd if they are the same size and res. I havent been able to find a straigt answer on this so far. I have an old laptop with a broken screen. Found a cheap lcd, same size and res. but I keep hearing how they have to be the same part number.?

If they were the same make and model laptops, you wouldn't have a problem.

If not, the contacts will probably be different.

So even if I had all the cables for the laptop, anything but the original part is unlikely to fit?

Yup, its unlikely. You can try it though if you're comfortable with the disassembly process. Let us know how it goes.

Another possible solution is if you have a DVI or VGA port on the laptop, you could hook up a LCD or CRT monitor. Granted, it would not longer be a portable device in the strictest sense, but you would still be able to use it if that's the only thing that was wrong with it.
