For that price range, your looking at used laptops. You may find a display model at your local PC store close to that range. Dell has some refurbished laptops in the $500 range.

The Asus Eee ships with Xandros Linux and does not officially support Windows XP. If you need Windows software compatability, I'd look at something else.

Yes, some people have put it on there. But is not officially supported. Unless you don't mind the potential issues, I'd look at a real Windows laptop. If you do try it, let us know how it goes.

The Eee ships with a driver CD for Windows, but since it doesn't have a Windows license, you have to spend $90 or so to get XP. That on top of the $399 price for an Eee makes it uneconomical, since you can get a laptop with a more powerful processor, more RAM, and more hard drive space for not much more.

Those are suppose to be pretty nice. Also take a look at Best Buy's weekly ad (it's online).

Merged your related threads alt.
I'd second that. ThinkPad's are excellent. You would be wise to add some RAM to that machine though, 512MB is a little weak, even for XP. |
