Gps
Hi all,
I'm interested in purchasing a GPS unit as a gift, but unsure h which brand would be the best. I have been looking into TomTom, Garmin and Mio. Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated ![]() TIA |

I bought my wife the GARMIN StreetPilot c340 for Christmas, so I guess we’ll see how that goes over in about 8 days. Also, PC Magazine did some reviews on the better selling units here: http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1738,2937,00.asp You could also just check out Newegg and read the reviews of the various units they sell. That's what I did.

My brother in law has a Garmin Zumo 550. It's quite a device but it's far from inexpensive. He had a Tomtom before and hated it.

Thanks for the info.
Do all of them include "free" map updates or is there an additional charge? |

Supposedly map updates are released semi-regularly. I would tend to think they are on par with Google or Mapquest.

Garmin charges for annual map updates, it's around 70 bucks. My b-i-l bought his in October, it came with 2007 maps, but when he registered it he got a one time update to the 2008 maps free. Next year, it's going to cost him for the update to the 2009 maps. Garmin uses Navteq.

Wow. $70 seems like quite a bit for map updates.

To buy them outright is $150 so the update is half price.

I guess nothing is really "free" these days
Been looking at Mio and Magellan units, seem to be reasonably priced and ease to use, especially when it will be a gift. |

I just picked up the Magellan 3100 Maestro, it cost me under $200 and as far as a GPS goes it does the job very well. I like the Magellan because it offers split screen technology illustrating upcoming turns. You don't need to spend alot of money on GPS units anymore. Mine doesn't have all the bells and whistles the more expensive units have but I would never use them anyway.
