Help! Screen fades to black...

Hello,

For about a week or so my Toshiba Qosmio G30 would suddenkly make the "plugging in a peripheral into an USB port double beep" sound, then the screen would go black for about 1.5 sec, then the image on the screen would return. Would do this either 2x or 3x in a row in the courwse of roughly 5 seconds once a day. What is going on with my laptop? Any ideas to fix this? I mean short of doing a "restore" and last solution reformat.

Thanks.

Depending on your level of experience, you might try opening up your lappy and checking for loose connections. If you've never done it before, don't start now.

Ummmmm.....HECK NO!! I'd have better luck finding a $100.00 bill sitting on my door step.

But, I did think the same thing. Could be a loose connection somewhere. Dealing with the USB ports maybe. As I've had a bluetooth adapter plugged into one of the USB ports on the left side of my laptop. Then accidentally bump the adapter bending it a little. Which probably did something to the USB ports. Perhaps. I don't know. I know some files are corrupted as I no longer see the b/w Microsoft Corporation svcreen upon booting up. But I do get the blue login screen and the beeps that preceed it.

I still have 6 months of waranty so...

But I was hoping there might be some OS fix. Might try to do a restore eventually to see if that doesn't do anything. Failing that...reformat. Failing that....to the service shop.

If you still have a warranty, I'd take it in. It doesn't sound like a software problem, and Toshiba has service centers all across the globe.

Help! Screen fades to black...PART 2

For some reason I can't access my other thread. Keep getting error messages. So here I am.

Any how, just wanted to note that I have dropped my laptop once from maybe 3 feet from the ground. Had a bluetooth mouse adapter in a USB port which I banged agaisnt a door jam. Bending the adapter a little. Which might have done something to the USB ports on the lft side. Don't know if this wouldn't have anything to do with my troubles. Though, this was done months ago. And my sudden "fade to black for a second" glitch didn't start happening till about a week ago.

Also, the two USB ports at the back are flukey. I would plug in a keyboard and sometimes the laptop wouldn't see it. The USB port at the back might be loose. As I'd have to unplug it and reinsert for it to work.

Perhaps I should have the USB ports checked and replaced. Shrug. This fading to black only happens once a day.

Would faulty USB ports result in distortion in transfered MP3 files to an iPod? I have MP3 files that play fine on my laptop but as soon as I play them on my iPod Video 80GB maybe 1/10th of the songs have distortion. With the sucess of the iPod this couldn't be how it is so I'm thinking it has to do with the problem I'm having with my laptop. Which I do plan on having it looked at in January. As I do have 6 more months on my waranty.

Thanks.

Anything that would interrupt a file transfer could cause it. If your system is under max load, you can get that.

"Max load"? When I was uploading songs that would be all I was doing. Nothing but. So my laptop was hardly being pushed.

Any how something tells me it has to do with the USB ports. Or if there is a cable connecting it to the hard drive maybe that. Maybe there's a loose connection? Shrug. My laptop suddenly went black for about 2 seconds again, as I was typing this, then what I was looking at on the screen returned.

A little annoying. Definitely needs to be looked at by the techies in the new year.
