Laptops and heat
I just got my Toshiba Qosmio G30 back yesterday. It's screen used to suddenly go black for 2 seconds and then come back. It would do this either 2x or 3x in a row. And it would double beep before the screens would go black. Since I got it back I've turned on the laptop maybe 4-5x and so far it hasn't happened again. Though it's early.
They ended up replacing the motherboard and cooling hardware (probably the heat sink and fan). And they cleaned the inside. Seems to be working. Replacing the cooling heardware. As while the keyboard does get a little warm it no longer gets "hot" when the laptop is plugged in to the wall. And when I booted up the laptop I wouldn't see the "Qosmio/Intel Logo" followed by the "Microoft Corp" b/w screen before the blue login screen. Now I see it. I'm glad they didn't have to reformat my HD. And that by replacing the motherboard and cooling hardware looks to have done the job. Knock on wood. ![]() Do all brands of laptops eminate heat through the keyboards? I notice the HP and Apple laptops at Best Buy are usually cool to the touch. Is it just how they are built? My buddy thinks it's because the place is more cool. Than my home. I wonder. I noticed on the new Apple MacBooks there aren't openings in the keyboard for the heat to escape. Does that mean it would have a better cooling system? Shrug. The Apple MacBook Pro laptops have a more open looking kieyboard. Don't know if you'd feel more heat or still not at all due to a different cooling system. And the placement of it's cpu. Comments? Last edited by DarkDTSHD; 01-15-2008 at 10:09 AM. |

Toshiba's are bad for kicking off alot of heat. You can try getting a laptop cooler and see if that helps.

They usually use CPU's that are made to use less power, and sometimes less heat. Alot of the Toshibas that I have worked on have a heatsink on the CPU and then that is heat piped over to another heatsink that has a fan that speeds up according to CPU temperature. Not sure if all laptops work this same way, but they would all be similar. Some do dissipate heat through the keyboard.

My G30 does have a fan. You can hear it spinning every now and then. And the keyboard does drop in temperature afterwards. So it is working now.
Toshiba's are known for running a bit warm? I'd believe that. Before the fix the right side of the keyboard would get more than warm. It was almost "hot". I should have known that before buying this laptop. But for now it's working as it should. Knock on wood. Have any of you had any experience with MacBooks or MacBook Pros? How are they with heat and relability? Last edited by DarkDTSHD; 01-15-2008 at 01:18 PM. |

I have heard about a lot of MacBooks (G5, not C2D) that overheat like nothing I've ever seen before.

My old Toshiba could probably keep my warm in any temp winter could throw at me if I held it to my chest. The thing got so hot it almost burned sometimes. It was insane.

My laptop only get hot while I'm gaming, epecially Crysis(it's the one in my sig). While idle or viewing a webpage the fan often stops, but the CPU temp hovers around 45C. Shows how effective the Intel SpeedStep is.

Heart comes from the fan, while gaming the fan works hard and it will get hot.

Well for now my G30 is working as it should. It only gets mildly warm. Then the fan kicks in and cools it down. So far so good. Knock on wood.
Unlike before I had it's motherboard and cooling hardware replaced last week. Was just wondering about the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. At Best Buys they felt cool to the touch. Though I suppose they hadn't been really pushed before I came so....who knows. |

The new Macs use Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's, which are very cool running. The older PowerPc CPU's Macs used to use ran hot.

Apple has come out with their new ultraportable (the MacBook Air), and it uses the same 13.3" screen as the regular MacBook. I find it unlikely that they will introduce anything smaller than that.

And if you want to burn discs or access discs you have to attach an external Superdrive. A hassel IMHO. And being so thin would it be able to keep cool? There's hardly enough eough room for a fan or heat sinks. I'm guessing it will rely on heat sinks. Might not have a fan. Unless they've developed uber thin fans for laptops. What I'd like to see Apple put out is a 12" or 13" screen version of their MacBook Pro. Proper keyboard, has builtin Superdrive, and at least a 128MB dedicated video card. And larger HD. If they don't announce one at the Macworld Expo then I guess I'll be getting a 15" MBP for my travels. And the Air is expensive for what you get. It's a novelty. Not that practical IMHO. |

I imagine the Air will be built on a ULV (ultra low voltage) Core CPU. These can almost run without a heatsink, perhaps they just attach it to a thin aluminium plate.
