How do you adjust screen resolution on a laptop

Bought my first laptop, a refurbished Dell Inspiron 8100 and I can't figure out how to adjust the screen resolution. It's set a some really high number when 800X600 would be preferable. When I set it at 800X600, the desktop image is real small so I'm wanting to know how to expand it out to the full screen dimensions. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Thanks.

Right click on windows desktop >properties > settings, then set your resolution from there.

edit: opps i read your problem wrong, is there no button on the screen to adjust the size?

No 800x600 is not preferable, you have to use the LCD screen's native resolution or get the results you're having.
What you can try, if the text is too small for you, is running large fonts.
Tell us the screens native resolution and what OS you're running.

If you want to run the screen at less than native resolution, you have to look in the bios for a screen stretch option.
