Static electricity and a laptop...

I recently bought a Toshiba laptop and I am very happy with it so far. I have, however, noticed a potential issue. I have already shocked it several times while holding it on my lap. Each time it has been when my hand got near one of the USB ports on the side. The jolts have been rather large but it doesn't seem to have affected operation.

Should I be worried about this?

this time of year that can end up being a major problem, I would suggest you take stepd to increase the humidity level in the house, like having a pot of water on the stove.

it is possible that a discharge could distroy something, and anything electronic.

Been using my Toshiba pretty solidly for close to a month, Hi Ho, and no problems here but have had a few shocks lately on door knobs. Is this with the battery, or with it plugged in? I've been using mine plugged in, but going thru a brick, I don't think that gives you any better grounding protection.

It is most likely that the shock was to the metal shell around the socket, not the pins, therefore is unlikely to damage anything.

I have been in the electronic repaire busness for over 40 years, and seen a lot of differant things distroyed from static discharge during the winter months, but hey its your computer, do what you think is best for you.

Yeah, sounds like a grounding issue. A computer at the local airport had some grounding issues. Every time we got a USB thumb drive close to the port, it would zap it and the PC would shut down/restart. We tied it to the metal desk with some wire wrapped around an empty fan grille and everything seemed to work out ok.

I know that doesn't really apply to a laptop, but it's a cool story anyways.
