Portable Media Player question

I have a Toshiba Gigabeat MES60VK (Toshiba's version of the ipod). It is suppose to support the following:

60 GB digital media player with Portable Media Center (PMC) interface for movies, photos, and music
Supports WMA Lossless, WMA, MP3, WAV, WMV and JPEG formats; built-in FM tuner
Transcodes MPEG-4, AVI, and MOV files; video-out jack connects to full-size TV or monitor
2.4-inch WVGA display with 320 x 240 resolution; supports wide range of music and video download services

But when I try to put AVI files on it, it says it cannot playback the file, only store it. Am I missing something? What does "transcodes" mean for AVI?

I tried putting a WMV file on it, and it said the file has properties outside of the device limits. What does this mean? I feel like I am not understand exactly what kind of video files can be put on the device. Do the files have to be specifically for mobile devices?

I think I figured it out. The resolution can be no more than 320 x 240, which seems to be the standard for these devices. I also think it has to be wmv. I guess I'll have to find a conversion software to conver the avi files into 320 x 240 wmv files.

Good sleuthing. Check out SUPER for converting video files. It can handle pretty much anything.

I ran into a similar issue with a Creative Zen player. They had kbps limits on videos, so anything high-res had to be converted down. I'm surprised Toshiba doesn't include any software to help with the process.
