looking for solid 12" laptop
My sister-in-law wants to buy a small laptop that will fit in a particular space in her desk. It will fit about a 12 incher. Any suggestions? I don't see a Dell on the website that small. She doesn't want to spend a lot of money (1000 or below) and I don't know laptops well enough to know which processor to recommend. Any help would be appreciated.

Dell has pretty much gotten out of the 12" market. The smallest in their current line is the XPS 1330 which is a nice little machine, but in that price range what I would probably suggest is to go to the Dell Outlet and look at the Latitude D430. It's one of their last gen models, but it's a nice little daily use computer. They're 12" and the prices are in the $800 a returned referb to 1,100 for a new never opened system that just had some packaging damage.
In that size range I like the Thinkpad X series a bit better, but the D430 was one of my serous choices when I was looking for similar.

Getting a new sub-$1000 12" will be very hard to find. I have an IBM x31 and x41 and like them both but I bought both used. Full price for an X series will easily go over $1000.

Which is why I suggested a referb Dell D430. I like the X series laptops as well, but they are expensive. The D430 isn't built quite as well as the Thinkpads are, but similar hardware spec and in the price range.

I wasn't implying that you didn't make a good suggestion.

New D430's are still available on the Dell small business site - but they start at $1143.

Looks like you can get a thinkpad x series for just north of $1000. I'm not sure if 1000 is a hard limit or just a ballpark for you.
