Toshiba satellite M70

Okay here goes not too familiar with lap tops but before I decide what to do with this one will ask for advice.
Battery seems to be gone as it won`t charge so presume it is I can still use the lap top with just plugging it in but sometimes with leaving it plugged in when I turn it on and page is all grey with lines in it it boots up but can`t see anything on the screen other times I can get it to work fine.
I removed the battery and seems to work fine but am I doing any harm to the computer by doing this also will have to cover the back with something until I get a new battery.
Do you think it is the battery that is causing the monitor page to be this or could it be something else.
And what happens if I unplug the computer and it has no battery will it lose the time etc.
This is a toshiba computer but can`t get any answers from them have tried getting information but unless I pay big bucks I get no help. Hate to pay money for something if I can buy a new one cheaper.
Also am using a different plug in adapter than the one came with it as the cord is gone on the other one but it is from an older toshiba and seems to work fine.
Hope I can get some advice from you folks.
Thanks

I'm guessing the problem with not being able to see anything on the screen is the motherboard going out. It's fine to use the computer with no battery, though -- there is a separate, smaller battery that keeps the CMOS settings and runs the clock.

I am back this time with a different question about same lap top. I took the lap top to have it diagnosed and was told it probably had a short in the connection to display adapters. Brought it home and turned it on it has been working fine for about eight hours now. Anyway didn`t ask about repairing the connection but presume it would be an expensive job. Anyone know anything about that. I have tried the monitor that I have with my desktop and same thing happened did that when I first had the problem so does that mean the whole connection gone and only solution is a new laptop. Hope if someone knows can inform me the computer belongs to student so was just trying to get it fixed if possible for a cheap price.
Have done a toshiba diagnostic test and all that passed.
Thanks

If the same problem is happening on an external monitor as on the internal LCD panel, most likely the video adapter is broken. That is soldered onto the motherboard, meaning the only solution would be to buy a new motherboard, which would cost around $500.
