I own a Dell Inspiron 9300 and I've been searching for a way to disable the on board mouse but all attempts so far have failed.
I am not able to disable the device and uninstalling the drivers just prompts a restart and immediate reinstall after reboot. Is there some option I am missing here? I am sorry if this is something that should be obvious but I have tried everything I can think of as far as the simple approach. ie: control panel options, device manager, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would think it's probably a BIOS option. When you restart, hit whatever key it says to enter Setup or BIOS (probably F2 or DEL). Once in, you should be able to browse to a page with the option to disable the Touchpad.

If you just want to disable the tap-to-click so that your cursor doesn't move random places when you inadvertently hit the touchpad while typing, that is an option in the Synaptics software. If you have never reformatted, the software should be on there and accessible through the Mouse control panel; if you have reformatted, it's available for download from support.dell.com.

Ok so I had to download the software from Dell Support in order to disable it. To be quite honest, I only reformatted this computer recently and I am fairly certain that the particular software I needed to disable it was not originally installed.....as I've been trying to take care of this problem for a while now.
Anyway, thanks to both of you for your help. Now I won't start randomly typing my current sentence in one I've already typed! PCMech really does have the best forum. Every time I've ever asked for help here, people have been quick to respond. Thanks again!

I've simply taped a piece of cardboard over the touchpad before.
