I think I want a laptop.
I don't know why I want one, but I do.
I want something small, and easy to carry around. I will only use it to listten to music, surf the internet, watch movies and videos, and use open office. I think I'm going to get the Asus EEE pc 900 on May 12th. I'll get the 20gb linux version. It's going to cost $549. http://www.computerworld.com/action/...icleId=9079078 Is there anything else that can compare to this for my needs?

I was doing that for a while today.
This seems like a good deal, but it also seems a bit big to just carry around with me. http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineS...en&s=dfh&cs=22 |

I have the Eee PC 8GB and it does what its supposed to quite well. I was surprised how quick it was for its size and specs. Battery life is pretty good as well.

The 900 is supposed to just have a larger screen, and thus a bit less battery life.

If you can find refurbished business-class notebooks, you should go for those instead. Business-class notebooks a robust (don't break easily) and usually offer more performance than normal consumer laptops. For example I picked up a HP NC6000 (Got it for $549, Pentium M, ATI Radeon 9600) business-class laptop about 2 years ago for $200 less than my new laptop HP dv9614ca (Got it for $749, Core 2 Duo, GMA X3000) and not only is it running in great condition, it's still faster in games and general use than my new laptop.

Damn conscience.
It wouldn't enrich my life in any sort. I basically camed up with this thought while I was at work yesterday, and was bored, and thought it would be nice if I had some movies with me, and a personal computer so I could start writing a book I'm working on. I rather not type that on the work computer, and that computer has no speakers, so I can't watch videos or listen to music. Funny thing is, I'm just working there temporarily, and only have a week left. But figured it would be cool to have my own computer to take with me where ever I went. It seems small enough that I could fit it into my jeans pocket. |

I've been reading that there might be some issues with the memory on the eee pc.
And I think I would want more than 20gb of storage, so I was considering adding a 1.8 hard drive to it. Would it make more sense to just get a better spec'd laptop for a similar price even though it's larger? What are some other small laptops that are easy to walk around with? |

I haven't looked into it to see if it would be a concern, but I have read a few things about the ssd memory that it only has a limited number of read/write cycles. I think this is true of all ssd devices, and flash memory. Not sure what that number would be, or how long it would last.
Does anyone know anything about this? EDIT: Found this which talks about the eee pc: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=8534&p=1 It makes sense that it would be 1 million cycles instead of a 100,000. If that's the case, then I'm not too worried, and will just buy an extra card to insert into the reader so I can put a few dvd movies on it. Or I'll still look into the 1.8 hard drives. The main thing that keeps me from getting an EEE pc is the size of it. Ya in theory a small little computer would be great to carry about, but you really need to think about how usable it will be for you. Personally I find the 13" screen and keyboard on my Macbook to be just big enough to not be too painful, and I still overshoot keys all the tome when I'm typing a lot. I look at the 12" screen laptops and they just look painful. I can use my BlackBerry and iPod Touch fine, but in a laptop form factor 9" just seems a bit too small for extended use, as cool as it is.

Update:
I received the eee 900, and have had the opportunity to play with it and must say I'm happy with my purchase. I also got a 2gb ddrr stick to put in it, and a 250gb external drive. I'll be posting a full review in the next day or so to talk about my experiences with it. |
